Back to school can be hectic for everyone, including parents, kids, and college students. That’s why it’s important to remember to do back to school car care, to ensure you don’t have any problems during the school year.
According to Allstate, many parents and college students forget to do regular maintenance this time of year because there are so many other things going on. Some of the most important things to check include the vitals under the hood. This includes:
- Transmission fluid
- Brake fluid
- Power-steering fluid
- Windshield wiper fluid
It’s also important to check the battery for faulty connections, as well as its age. Consumer Reports suggest having your battery checked if it’s older than two to three years old.
Check your tires. Not only should you look to see if they’re properly inflated, but also make sure the tread is still usable. If you insert a penny into the tread and you can’t see above Abe Lincoln’s head, you’re good. Don’t forget the spare!
Look for local resources, especially if you’re a new college student. Know where there’s a garage, police station, and Motor Assistance Program (like AAA). Understanding what to do and where to go in an emergency is crucial.
